OTTAWA, May 13, 2010 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Springer's Meats Inc. are warning the public not to consume Salerno Sliced Pepperoni and Springer's Sliced Bacon sold from some deli stores in Ontario because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The Salerno Sliced Pepperoni was sold in variable weights only from Brant Food Centre, 94 Grey Street, Brantford, Ontario between April 28 and May 13, 2010.

The Springer's Sliced Bacon was sold in variable weights from the following deli stores between April 28 and May 9, 2010.

The above sliced meats may or may not bear the original Salerno or Springer's brand name. If consumers are not sure whether they have the affected product, they are advised to contact the deli / store where it was purchased.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The manufacturer, Springer's Meats Inc., Hamilton, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
